shawm, pommer, zinc, historical bagpipes, tamburello
Roots
Born in Birmingham, UK, raised in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Study
University of Warwick; City University, London; Royal Conservatory, The Hague; and at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
Professional
I am a freelance musician playing mainly early music and world music. I teach shawm as well as medieval and renaissance ensemble at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and historical improvisation at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Frankfurt am Main.
Why
This career has chosen me! It gives me the opportunity to do the things I love to do most in the whole world and meet the most wonderful people.
Elective Affinities
One concert that changed my life was Usted Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his ensemble at the Stadtcasino when I was studying in Basel. I learned as much that night as I did in 5 years at Schola!
What question would you ask yourself?
What is your greatest musical gift? The ability to sing one line and whistle another at the same time. This is great for practicing counterpoint!
