Pierre Le Rouge, based on the mural at the Cimetière des Innocents, 1490
The late medieval Dance of Death, which adorned church and cemetery walls from the 15th century onwards, continues to fascinate us today: death spares no one! In a grand procession, the personified Death leads members of every rank in society, from the Pope and the Queen to the minstrel and the beggar, in their final dance.
For music fans, the most intriguing depictions are those in which either Death himself or people from the various social classes hold musical instruments in their hands. Shawms, bagpipes, pipe & tabor – these instruments will take centre stage in this concert.
