s early as the 15th century, it was customary at the Burgundian court to play originally sung chansons on the recorder. With his 1533 collection 27 Chansons musicales à quatre parties, music printer Pierre Attaingnant continued this tradition by designating selected pieces as particularly suitable for “la fleuste à neuf trous” – the recorder. In contrast to the vocal chansons, the programme also features danced solo galliards: fiery leaping dances likewise found in Attaingnant’s prints.
