Roots
I was born and raised in Nagoya, the third largest city in Japan.
Study
First in a girls’ choir. At the university in Tokyo, where I studied musicology, there was a subject called “organ,” which was quite a rare case. So I was able to start learning this instrument at the age of 20. After that I studied in Basel.
Professional
I am the principal organist at the Gellertkirche in Basel. I also play the organ in the cathedral in Arlesheim. I perform with various ensembles, but also alone on large organs. Teaching is my favorite activity. I like to analyze pieces and problems of students, both musicology and my experience of learning the organ late in life help me in this.
Why
In a difficult situation in my life, God gave me this opportunity.
Elective Affinities
A CD by the English pioneers of early music, which my father (an engineer) happened to buy for me on a business trip. That’s how I got to know early music. Having a dog or dancing again, that’s what I miss right now.
Something else
When I have problems with an organ, I let my husband fix the organ 😉.
