Ghiselin Danckerts (c1510–1567) Ave maris stella, 1535
nusual musical forms and a spirit of creative play lie at the heart of this concert program. Quodlibet can be translated as “whatever one pleases.” The term refers to a musical composition that combines different melodies or themes – often in a humorous or inventive way. Familiar tunes and motives are woven together so that they sound simultaneously, creating a lively and richly layered musical texture.
Another masterful genre featured in this program is the riddle canon. Composers such as Josquin des Prez and Jacobus of Liège competed with one another to devise complex structures filled with hidden clues. These compositions challenge both performers and listeners to uncover concealed messages and to solve the musical puzzles embedded within the music.
